Abstract: Problems and methods of power quality (PQ) in their close connection with reliability of power supply are considered. This connection can be seen in the increase of the failure flow of both grid and industrial electrical equipment under deteriorated PQ. Author believes that computational models for estimation of reliability of power supply should be further defined by introducing additional factors or components in differential equations system describing thermal processes in electrical equipment. Relationship between power quality and power supply reliability can appear not only through thermal processes in electrical equipment, but also through direct impact of power quality indices (PQI) on its performance. Such PQI are primarily voltage and frequency in the grid. Having in mind the specific features of impact factors, author draws attention to the particulars of PQ management procedures, the role of monitoring in this problem and the need for research with respect to smart grids. Some lessons learned by the specialists and scientists of the Moscow Power Engineering Institute (National Research University «MPEI») at the Department of Electrical Power Systems are illustrated by examples in the final part of the paper.
